Connecting the Cause is a volunteer engagement consultancy dedicated to keeping community at the center of care. We exist to reimagine volunteerism by identifying and uprooting harmful service practices so that dignity and respect lead instead of pity and power.

We help guide organizations and leaders of volunteers apply the principles of Co-Dreaming through intentionally designed workshop, curated resources, coaching and hands-on consulting.

We teach individuals and organizations how to identify, challenge and uproot power, privilege, white supremacy and paternalism in volunteerism while reimagining a new future for service, for Co-Dreaming. We incessantly advocate for voices of color to be heard, recognized and valued in the service and volunteerism sector. This work is about taking the focus off of outside volunteers as heroes and putting community work back in the hands of the community for ultimate direction and implementation.

Breauna, The Founder and Cause Consultant of Connecting the Cause uses her decade plus stint in the nonprofit sector and in volunteer management to support nonprofits, organizations, civic groups and CSR employee volunteers how to ensure the community stays at the center of all decision-making, strategy, planning and support. Breauna also guides individuals on how to volunteer responsibly and effectively in both justice and love, and how to become real partners in change by directing their energy and actions towards solidarity and dignity.

An established organization or institution that's ready and dedicated to ensuring that dignity and respect is upheld and and pity and paternalism are examined within your community care practices. We can see your areas of growth while also navigating a new reimagined way of connection. Let us help you assess your volunteer program, services, and programming to ensure that community stays at the center.

Our Newest Offering:

Do you want to take a step towards a more community-centric volunteer orientation? Invite me to attend. No seriously, sign me up. Think about this...At any time of the day, all over the world, someone, somewhere is in a volunteer orientation. THERE IS AN OPPORTUNITY HERE!

Is your orientation just informing, or is it actually engaging in truth-telling and setting the stage for real community change?

Here’s how it will work:

🌻 I come to your orientation (via zoom) and sit in as if I am a potential volunteer.

🌻 You’ll send over any materials associated with the orientation (slides, handouts, etc)

🌻 I’ll take my notes about what I hear, feel, and think as it relates to the orientation itself.

🌻 We’ll jump on a one-hour (non-judgmental) debrief call to go over my thoughts and yours (which will be recorded for you).

🌻 I’ll send over a summary of our meeting and some tailored actionable and practical recommendations to implement for future orientations (1-3pager). You’ll also get a list of reflection prompts to incorporate, and some not so cringy ice-breakers as well.

My capacity currently allows a deep dive into 15 orientations for the next quarter, so let me know if you’re interested by clicking on the graphic and going to the next step!

I'm so excited to connect, because I see a deep underutilization of this step in the volunteer journey AND oddly enough I actually like sitting in on volunteer orientations!
